"I fixed the internet"
Background |
Background
Back in September 2023, I wrote an article on here about my search for information about W. E. Round and a radio programme theme tune
that he had written and called, simply 'Banff', from the name of the town in Alberta, Canada.
(If you haven't read that
article yet, it might be better to do so before continuing. Click here to go to it)
That article explained that my search had been largely fruitless. I hoped that in publishing it, I would 'fix the internet' or at least plug one
little hole in it. If I was successful, searches for W. E. Round would no longer yield the disappointing 'no results found' message.
Feedback!
About a week ago, I received a lovely email from a man named David who had also been to the Whyte Museum in Banff, seen the same
sheet music and taken a picture of it with a view to figuring out the melody for fun when he got home. He had also tried to do some
research into Mr. Round and concluded that there was little information about him to be had. However, his searches did have at least
one success.
He found my website, read my story, and got in touch!
He too, wanted to know what was on the third page of the 'Banff' sheet music so that his daughter could
finish playing it and finish making a recording of it. She had already begun by recording the first two
pages of the piano accompaniment part. Of course, I replied and attached the final page of the tune. I
hope that he and his family have enjoyed playing and listening to the results.
A rewarding experience then, to have not only fixed the internet, but to find that my writing had been found, not by chance but by somebody
who was actually searching for the subject. Pleased to read from his email that he had found it interesting.
As well as describing how he had discovered the music in the museum, David sent me what little
extra details (tiny morsels, he called them) he had found about W. E. Round. It appears that neither of us managed to establish what his initials
stand for but Mr. Round apparently
served multiple terms as executive president of the Banff Chamber of Commerce in the late 1950s. He was also
a mentor to Leonard Leacock, a pianist, teacher and composer.
Other than that, the composer of the lovely tune remains very much a mystery, sad to say.
